Community Round Table: Unreal Relationships – The Rise of AI Companionship

January 15 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

No Cost to Attend

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly woven into daily life, many people are turning to AI-based chatbots and virtual companions for comfort, conversation, and emotional connection. But behind the convenience and novelty lies a growing concern: What happens when technology begins to replace real human relationships?

Join us for an in-depth roundtable discussion exploring the social, emotional, psychological, and relational risks of relying on AI for companionship. This event brings together counselors, relationship educators, and technology experts to help inform and present practical methods to help establish boundaries that can protect authentic relationships in a digital age.

Panelists Include:

  • Ian Lindsley – A software engineer with a B.S. in Computer Science from UMBC. He is a PhD candidate in Biblical Studies at Capital Bible Seminary. He serves as the Research & Development (R&D) Lead at unfoldingWord, a Bible translation nonprofit, where much of his current work focuses on applied AI.
  • Molly Sherman – Serves as the Executive Director of Carroll Technology & Innovation Council, with a goal to help people, organizations, and communities use technology as a tool for growth and connection.
  • Ashleigh AthenAshleigh Athen, LCSW-C, is a therapist and practice owner with a passion for helping people reconnect—with themselves and with one another—through life’s hardest seasons. The practice work centers on trauma, grief, and building healthy, supportive connections.

This conversation is designed for parents, couples, educators, counselors, ministry leaders, and anyone concerned about the future of human connection.
